Today’s Words of Wisdom v.7.25.09

“… We believe that although America is a melting pot, its citizens will blend together and live harmoniously only if they are willing, not to discard their heritage, but to recognize that they are first and foremost Americans. They must realize and appreaciate the fact that they are citizens of the greatest nation in the history of the world, not just for white males, but for people of all races, genders, and religions. You may challenge my statement that they must appreciate the greatness of this country. If so, I say to you that national allegiance and patriotism are absolute minimum requirements a nation must demand of those who want to enjoy its citizenship. And patriotism is a part of America’s unique culture.

Our nation provides its citizens with more political and economic freedom than any other country in the history of the world. It has been able to do that through the years only because of the dedication and committment of our forbears, who understood these freedoms were worth fighting for. They understood that the preservation of our freedoms was dependent upon the geographical, political, social, economic, and cultural integrity of America as a nation; not as some amorphous landmass that enforces no territorial or moral boundaries. For any nation to survive as a cohesive national unit – and this is especially true of America because it has so freely opened itself up to all peoples, cultures, and influences – its citizens must be imbued with a strong sense of nationalism and patriotism. That’s right. Those are not dirty words. For America to remain the beacon of light it has been to the rest of the world, that “shining city on a hill,” its citizens must honor their social compact with one another and, above all, with the United States of America. For America to remain the melting pot, it must encourage its citizens truly to melt in and not segregate themselves to the point of Balkanizing the nation.”
